The best place to shoot a turkey is the head and neck to ensure a quick, clean, and ethical kill. For shotgun hunters, aiming at the base of the neck provides the most effective shot pattern, while bowhunters can target the body vitals for an effective shot. Avoid body shots with a shotgun, as they can result in wounded birds and missed opportunities.

Turkey hunting can be highly effective in less-than-ideal weather, including light rain, windy conditions, overcast days, and immediately after storms. These conditions often reduce hunting pressure and make turkeys more active or predictable. Hunters should adjust tactics by calling louder in the wind, focusing on open areas in the rain, and targeting feeding zones after storms.

To call turkeys effectively, use basic sounds like yelps, clucks, and purrs to mimic hen behavior, and adjust your calling based on turkey response and hunting pressure. Start with soft, realistic calls, then increase intensity only if needed, as overcalling can reduce your chances of success.

A turkey box call is a "friction" call that uses a wooden box attached to a wooden paddle. Although box calls are widely considered the best option for beginner turkey hunters, many experienced hunters continue to carry them into the field each year.

The Arizona Spring Turkey Season 2026 runs from April 24 to May 21, with set dates varying by intended hunting zone and type. The application deadline for the 2026 season is October 7, 2025, and results were released on October 24, 2025. 

If you're eager to start the Colorado spring turkey season 2026, you're in luck: the general season starts mid-April and runs through May. You'll need to be ready, though: licenses are limited and allocated via a draw system, and specific deadlines for license draws occur early in the year.

Wisconsin turkey hunters can enjoy dedicated spring and fall seasons in 2026. The spring season runs from mid-April to late May and includes a youth hunt from April 11–12 and six structured, seven-day periods (Period A starts April 15).

In Pennsylvania, the turkey hunting bag limit is generally one bearded bird per day during the spring season, with a maximum of two bearded birds per license year if you have a Special Spring Gobbler License. The fall season limit is one bird (either sex) per license year.
