Keep in mind that rabbits head for low, thick, brushy areas such as old wood piles or wild blackberry patches where they can easily hide.

If you are hunting later in the year and there is snow on the ground, it will be much easier to tell for sure whether rabbits are using an area. Look for droppings and footprints leading in and out of these cover spots. Fresh sign is obviously the best, but look for any sign that indicates rabbits have frequented the area, and check these locations often.

When hunting rabbits, timing is key: like most animals during the later part of the year, rabbits will go where the most food is available. Winter is a harsh time for all animals—not just big game—so keep food sources in mind when scouting, and look for anything that might still be green and contain moisture.

If you have food plots on your property, these will also be good places to consider. Even if deer season is over, these areas can be a major draw for small-game critters as well.

Tips for How to Find the Best Places to Hunt Rabbit

When hunting rabbits, scout early and late in the day, as they are most active when moving between feeding spots at dawn and dusk. Hunting after rain or snow can also help make rabbit sign more visible.

When rabbit hunting, your shots will often be on very fast-moving, small targets, and running dogs may add to the pressure. Using dogs can be beneficial for tracking rabbits, but doing so won't offer you the easy shots of a slowed-down walk to brushy edges, or the clean shots a hunter can get when standing still.
