When Does Spring Turkey Season Start in Georgia?

Keep a close eye on the Georgia turkey hunting season dates, as the difference in opening dates will dictate when you can first don your vest, set an early morning alarm, and take part in the excitement of opening day.

While dates haven't changed from last year, wildlife management areas (WMAs) may enforce their own dates and rules. It's always best to double-check right before your first planned hunt.

2026 Georgia Turkey Season Dates at a Glance

Youth & Mobility-Impaired Hunt

Youth and mobility-impaired hunters will get first crack at a gobbler in the 2026 Georgia turkey game season. The window for these hunters is March 21 – March 22, 2026.

Private Land (Statewide)

Statewide private-land hunting opens on March 28 and ends May 15.

Georgia has a relatively short spring turkey season, so if you intend to hunt private land, it's best to line up these opportunities and start reaching out to landowners as early as possible. With the HuntWise mapping feature, you can view public and private land demarcations and access contact details for private landowners.

Public Land Hunts

Public land hunts on Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), Voluntary Public Access lands (VPAs), and National Forest lands will open April 4 and close on May 15.

Georgia Turkey Bag Limits & Restrictions (2026)

In Georgia, wild turkey populations have been declining due to habitat loss and predation. As a result, the Georgia DNR has implemented conservation measures that limit seasonal and daily harvests.

  • Statewide Limits: The season bag limit is two gobblers per hunter, with a limit of one gobbler per day.
  • Public Land-Specific Rules: On WMAs, VPA lands, and in National Forests, the limit is one gobbler per area per hunter.
  • Gobblers Only: Only gobblers are legal during the spring season. This restriction means no hens or jakes, and you must be incredibly careful when shooting.

The season limit is two gobblers, with one taken per day, and public-land hunters are limited to one gobbler per area per person. Always double-check area-specific Georgia turkey hunting regulations before heading out, as WMA rules may differ.

Planning is priority number one, so line up both private and public hunting opportunities (using HuntWise to contact landowners) and prepare your clothing and gear for the sometimes unpredictable spring weather and rain. Consider mentoring a young hunter during the youth weekend to share the excitement of turkey hunting!

Required Licenses & Reporting in Georgia

As you plan your hunt, make sure you understand the Georgia hunting licensing and hunter education rules for the state!

Hunter Education

All hunters born on or after January 1, 1961, must complete hunter education as a legal prerequisite to obtaining a hunting license in Georgia. You can complete your hunter education through a provider like Hunter-Ed, which is valid in all states requiring hunter education.

Hunter education is much more than just ticking off a box before heading out into the field. It's foundational education across a range of important hunting topics, including safety and firearm handling, ethical practices, regulatory alignment, conservation, and hunting etiquette.

Before gearing up for a hunt, check that everyone in your group (including young hunters) is certified to reduce the likelihood of accidents and ensure full legal compliance.

Hunting License & Big Game License

All hunters 16 years of age or older must have a valid hunting license and a big game license. You can get your license online through the Go Outdoors Georgia portal

You can also pick up a license in person from an approved license agent.

Harvest Record and Game Check

All hunters are required to report their turkey harvest immediately before moving the bird. It's free to report, and hunters should include the harvest date and county when reporting.

Hunters are also required to report turkey harvests within 24 hours via the Georgia Game Check system.

Georgia does not require a separate turkey hunting tag, as the cost is part of the fees for hunting and big game licenses. Instead, you must complete a harvest record for data collection.
