Understanding Wild Hog Behavior

Wild hogs are renowned for their intelligence, adaptability, and resilience, which is why they inhabit various natural environments and zones across North America. They can be found in more than 35 U.S. states and are known to damage crops and agricultural zones while also competing and dominating native species for food and the habitat.

These animals inhabit a wide range of the Southern U.S. states, and their distribution is expanding due to a lack of natural predators and adaptation to climates and differing conditions.

Typically, wild hogs prefer natural zones with deep cover, such as forests, swamps, and marshlands. They are also commonly encountered in agricultural areas with corn, soybean, and nut crops. Their diet includes roots, crops, small animals, and acorns, and they often feed in the early morning or late evening.

Regarding socialization and grouping, sows and piglets travel in groups, while mature boars are more solitary. These groups of females and young are known as sounders, and boars tend to have a broader range, boosting their mating opportunities.

Choosing the Right Equipment

Wild boars are resilient animals with thick skin and a muscular frame, so your firearm choice should reflect this biology.

Rifles and shotguns are the most popular firearm options, with calibers like .30-06, .308, or .223 Remington for rifles and slugs for shotguns being common choices. However, some firearms hunters prefer a Glock for hunting hogs and experience good success with this choice.

Bowhunting for feral pigs is also popular, especially in states like Hawaii. Most hunters opt for a compound bow with broadheads and high penetration power, essential for quickly bringing down hogs.

Wild pigs may become even more nocturnal in popular areas or zones where the temperature can get hot. In this instance, consider quality lights for car hunting, night vision equipment, or thermal scopes.

Scouting and Locating Wild Hogs

Where's the best place to hunt wild hogs?

First, determine whether you plan to hunt private or public land. Due to the infestation of wild hogs, especially in states such as Texas and California, there are plenty of opportunities for hunting on private leases and even specialist opportunities such as the famous Texas helicopter hog hunt.

Use HuntWise to locate landowner boundaries and contact information to reach out and ask permission.

If you plan a DIY hunt on public land, you may need to prepare more to determine where the hogs are. Start by using HuntWise to locate potential bedding areas, thick vegetation for cover, or feeding areas such as the edges of crops.

Next, get out in the field and target hog signs, anything from heavily worn trails to clumps of hog hair tied up in wire fences.

After heavy rain or near the local water deposit, up the mountains near my local spot, you'll find unmistakable signs of hog wallows that look like giant, wide baths in the slop. If you're sure there are pigs around but need help putting eyes on them, consider setting up a trail cam near feeding areas, water sources, and travel corridors to help pinpoint hog activity times.

Best Times and Seasons For Wild Hog Hunting

One of the benefits of hog hunting is the year-round opportunity that many states offer due to the nuisance these creatures pose to the natural ecology.

Dusk is typically a prime time to head out on a hog hunt because they often return to their bedding areas after a night of foraging. Or, as the sun rises, hogs tend to be more visible in open areas, such as fields and food plots, where they might linger before seeking cover for the day.

Hogs are also active at night, and this can be a great time to target the species as long as it is permitted in the state where you intend to hunt.

What Are the Best Hunting Methods?

One of the most exciting components of hog hunting is the versatility of different hunting methods that it offers.

During the daytime, one of the leading strategies is to head to known feeding areas or open lands to spot and stalk, which requires glassing with optics or binoculars before moving in to take a shot. If permitted, baiting can also be a great way to draw in many pigs. Corn, molasses, or sweet-smelling attractants can all lure hogs into shooting range.

If you've discovered a hog sign, still hunting by using a stand or blind can also be a great way to put eyes on the hogs. Just remember that patience is vital.

Training your dog for hog hunting is not just an investment in time and effort; it's a commitment. However, it's well worth the effort as your canine best friend's tracking, cornering, and capturing skills can be a game-changing strategy for hog hunting.

Licensing and Legal Considerations

Although hogs may not be classified or as strictly regulated as other species, you will likely need a hunting license at the bare minimum.

Also, due to the dangerous nature of pig hunting, hunter education is highly recommended, as is hunting with an experienced hog hunter before you are confident in the field.

Safety Tips For Hog Hunting and Meat Harvesting

Hog hunting can be dangerous, especially when dealing with fully-grown boars. These animals are powerful, aggressive, and territorial, with tough skin and razor-sharp tusks.

It's essential to approach cautiously and always be prepared to make a follow-up shot if required. Always be aware of your surroundings and mentally map potential escape routes or strategies should the pig become agitated.

Additionally, pigs can carry disease, so meat care is essential. This begins by assessing the pig for any visible signs of disease, such as sores, thinness, or fluid discharge.

Remember, hog meat can spoil quickly, especially in hotter regions. Therefore, it's crucial to field dress quickly, have your ice ready, and bring gloves and eyewear for additional protection.
