If you've read many of the Field Guide blogs, you've seen a wide range of names as authors of these blogs. We tap into knowledge from a group of experienced hunters and HuntWise hunting app users known as the Field Team.
In addition to our internal staff hunting experts (who also help create the content for our Field Guide and Field Guide+), and our Pros (like John Dudley and Jeff Sturgis), the Field Team's contributions allow us to share even more insights and expertise with you, no matter if you're a new hunter or an experienced hunter looking to improve your skills and hunts.
In addition to their day jobs and their hunts throughout the year, these hunters take time to share tips and tricks within our blogs. You may also see them sharing their hunting successes on our HuntWise Field Team Facebook page.
So, who are Field Team content contributors for the Field Guide? Let's get to know them a bit!
John Gay
John is a Texas-based hunter and outdoor photographer who grew up chasing mule deer and quail around the rugged plateaus of West Texas. When he's not on horseback in the mountains, hunting hogs, or calling in ducks, he can be found managing the deer herd on his small family ranch or meticulously creating spreadsheets for next season's draw odds.
John's hunting experience ranges from deer to coyote and ducks. He's helped us with content ranging from how to field dress a deer to other aspects of processing deer in the field. He's also talked about types of bows, broadheads, and more.
Alec Pratt
Alec has been hunting for 20 years, hunting a variety of game, including whitetail, pheasant, quail, ducks, geese, and wild hogs — basically anything that moves (and is legal to hunt). He primarily hunts in Alabama but also ventures out into other states periodically.
He typically hunts from October through February for 40-50 days a year, leading to plenty of experience to share with us through the Field Guide.
Check out Alec's insights on pheasant hunting. He also shares a typical day in the field when hunting deer if you're interested in reliving a hunt!
Travis Hunter
Travis is an avid deer and turkey hunter, but he also hunts some small game in the Indiana and Kentucky areas. He's also looking into some other out-of-state big game in the future — as soon as his kids get a little older.
If you're looking ahead to turkey season, check out Travis's insights on where to place your shot when hunting turkeys. He can also help you know what to do after the shot to bring your bird home successfully.
Thomas Williams
Thomas does most of his hunting from a saddle. He's an experienced hunter in Michigan, going after turkeys, whitetail, and squirrels.
Cody has been hunting for about 15 years, including hunts for whitetail, rabbits, and squirrels.
He lives in west central Ohio. He loves hunting with dogs, regularly going after rabbits and squirrels with his dogs, family, and friends.
Check out his insights on different gun calibers and how to choose the right one for your hunt. He also talks about the best shot placement tips for a successful deer hunt.
Kyle Wilson
Kyle has hunted for 17 years. He hunts rabbits, squirrels, whitetail, turkeys, and coyotes — all in the Midwest.
He says, "I used to make it out nearly every weekend from opening day until the end of the season. But as I have added to my family with three little ones now, my time is more limited with how often I am able to get out."
Kyle's experience can help you avoid mistakes when using deer calls. He also explains the difference between a wolf vs. a coyote if you're headed out for a coyote hunt during the off-season.
Scott Reddinger
Scott is a writer and content creator from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. When he isn't passionately chasing whitetails or grouse around the Northwoods, Scott enjoys spending time with his wife and two young daughters.
What Do These Hunters Have in Common? The HuntWise Hunting App!
While these hunters come from different areas of the country, they have HuntWise in common. And these are just a few of the hunters who love the app and use it for every hunt.
The HuntWise hunting app makes it easier to scout and understand hunting areas, mark scrapes, signs, bedding areas, stand locations, and more, and pick the best days to hunt based on wind direction, weather, and animal movement forecasting.
Our Field Team hunters use the app to improve their hunts, get access to big discounts on gear, and be part of the HuntWise community with other hunters. Hunting with friends and family is easier when everyone uses the same app! With HuntWise, share markers, maps, notes, and more with your hunting buddies.
